21 New Ransomware Groups Surface in First Half of 2024
Rapid7 Labs Report Highlights Increase in Ransomware Incidents
A new report from Rapid7 Labs reveals a surge in ransomware activity, with 21 new groups emerging in the first six months of 2024 alone.
The report analyzes data from Rapid7's incident response teams and independent research. It indicates that ransomware attacks continue to be a major threat, with over 5600 separate incidents tracked in 2023.
Despite the increase in new groups, the report notes that the overall number of ransomware families remains relatively stable. However, the researchers emphasize that the threat landscape is constantly evolving, with new methods and tactics emerging.
"The rise of new ransomware groups is a reminder that organizations cannot afford to be complacent in their security posture," said Jen Miller-Osborn, senior threat intelligence analyst at Rapid7 Labs. "Financial gain continues to outweigh the risks for these criminals, which means we can expect this threat to continue to evolve and grow."
