In 1948, Mother Teresa left the Sisters of Loreto and founded the Missionaries of Charity, a new religious order dedicated to serving the poorest of the poor. The order quickly grew, and by the time of her death in 1997, there were over 4,000 Missionaries of Charity working in 133 countries.
